Required Animal Subjects CITI Training
The Public Health Service (PHS) Policy, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act and Regulations and Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals require that all personnel involved with the care, treatment and use of laboratory animals be adequately trained, educated and qualified to perform their duties. Training of animal use personnel is at the foundation for developing and supporting an Animal Care and Use Program whose priority is the protection of animal welfare. As such, it is the responsibility of the UTHSCSA, and through it, the IACUC, to ensure that all personnel are appropriately qualified to perform their duties prior to their work with animals.The Office of the Institutional Animal Care Program administers the mandatory IACUC animal use training program using web-based modules provided by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) at . Animal use personnel are required to use CITIProgram.org to complete the following modules, however equivalent training may be accepted on a case-by-case basis as determined by the OIACP. Required DLAR Vivarium Training
Required DLAR Vivarium Training
The DLAR Orientation/Training class “Introduction to DLAR and How to Function Within the Vivarium” is required before entering the vivarium.
This is in addition to the CITI training required by the IACUC.
The DLAR Orientation/Training class is held every Thursday at 8:30 A.M. in room 113D, 1st floor of the Medication Bldg.
There is no registration needed for the class. Please show up on time with your UTHSA ID.

DLAR Specialized Training
DLAR Specialized Training
Upon request the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) can provide more specialized and protocol -specific training for research personnel seeking a didactic and hands-on approach. Currently there are eleven optional animal use training classes offered to investigator personnel for species and protocol specific procedures such as Basic Handling & Restraint , Surgical Techniques, Anesthesia, Breeding Colony Management, and others.
